What we do
Home Setup Picks is a UK-based review site for the things a home office is actually made of: standing desks, ergonomic chairs, monitor arms, desk mats and cable tidies, laptop stands and sleeves, lighting, and the earbuds, webcams and microphones that make calls bearable. We do the spec-reading and the comparing so you can pick with confidence, and we tell you plainly when something is not worth the money.
Two kinds of pick, labelled honestly
- Hands-on - gear we own and use at our own desk. These picks carry a Hands-on badge, our own photographs, and notes from living with the product: what it is like after weeks, not minutes.
- Spec-checked - gear we have not physically tested. These picks are built from the manufacturer's published specification, the standards it supports, warranty terms and brand track record, and they are scored on exactly the same rubric. We never dress a spec-checked pick up as hands-on.
The mix is deliberate: a site that only reviewed what one person could buy would be tiny, and a site that pretended to have tested everything would be lying. See how we choose and score for the full method.
How we choose products
- Real specifications over marketing - height ranges in millimetres, load ratings in kilograms, recline angles, VESA patterns, microphone counts and battery hours, checked against the manufacturer's own data.
- Every link verified - each recommendation is checked against the live retailer page so the link lands on the exact product we describe.
- Scored on our own rubric - every pick earns an HSP Score out of 10 from published criteria, independent of anyone else's star ratings.
- A pick for each job - best overall, best budget and best premium where a category has tiers; where a guide covers two different jobs instead, one pick per job.
- No health claims - a good chair or desk can make long days more comfortable; we will never tell you it treats, fixes or prevents a medical condition. If you have a medical question about your setup, ask a professional.
Who writes this site
Home Setup Picks is written and maintained by the editor behind the Picks family of sites, a UK-based, self-taught technologist who has worked from a home office for years. No pick on this site is in the Hands-on tier yet: every guide is spec-checked, built from the maker's published specification and the live retailer listing, with the prose drafted with AI assistance and checked against those sources before it goes up. The sibling site, Simple Product Picks, covers chargers, hubs and cables with the same method. We keep the focus on the products rather than on ourselves: the evidence here is the maker's specifications and the live listing, not a headshot.
How we stay up to date
Retailer catalogues change constantly, so every guide we publish gets its links re-verified on a rolling basis and a refresh whenever a better product earns its place. Where we show a price it is clearly dated and comes from the retailer's own data feed; otherwise check the retailer page via any of our links for current pricing and availability.
